Barcelona confirm Flick signs two-year extension amid strong La Liga title push

German coach commits to Camp Nou through 2028 as Catalans close in on first league title since 2023.

FC Barcelona announced on Tuesday that head coach Hansi Flick has signed a two-year contract extension, tying the German tactician to the club until June 2028 and ending weeks of speculation about his long-term future at Camp Nou.

The renewal, confirmed in an official statement released by the club's communications department at midday, comes as Barcelona sit four points clear at the top of LaLiga with five matches remaining, on course for what would be Flick's first domestic title since taking charge in the summer of 2024. Assistants Marcus Sorg and goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg have also extended their deals on matching terms, the club confirmed.

"Hansi has restored an identity to this team and has earned the trust of the dressing room, the board and the supporters," club president Joan Laporta said at a press conference at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. "Continuity was the obvious decision. We are building something that goes beyond a single season."

Sporting director Deco, speaking to Catalunya Ràdio, said negotiations had advanced rapidly following an emergency board meeting on Sunday at Laporta's residence in the Pedralbes district of Barcelona, despite the club's elimination by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League quarter-finals earlier this month. "We never wavered. Hansi's project is clear, and the players have responded to him from day one. The European exit only reinforced our belief that this group needs stability, not upheaval," Deco said.

Flick, 61, who guided Bayern Munich to a continental treble in 2020, took over a Barcelona side in financial turmoil and has overseen the integration of academy graduates Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí and Marc Bernal into the senior squad. His new deal, according to Catalan daily Sport, is worth a reported €12 million per season, with performance bonuses tied to Champions League progression. The package has been structured to comply with LaLiga's 1:1 spending rule, sources at the club indicated.

The extension is expected to accelerate summer planning at Camp Nou. Sources at the club confirmed that Flick will lead a squad overhaul targeting a new left-back and a creative midfielder, with Athletic Club's Nico Williams again identified as a priority signing, while Rafa Márquez, currently coaching Barça Atlètic, is expected to be promoted to the senior staff.

Captain Ronald Araújo welcomed the news on social media, posting: "The boss stays. Now let's finish the job." Barcelona travel to Villarreal on Saturday before hosting Real Betis the following weekend.
